Redfish Action in Lafitte, LA

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Sunday was a nice day for fishing the Lafitte area. The redfish are biting well when the weather allows us to go out and hunt for them.
The wind was down first thing sunday moring, It was easy to see the Redfish cruising the shore lines with the calm water. The water was dirty the first three stops we made. But we kept looking for cleaner water conditions, and it finally paid out for us. We came across a school of 15 to 20 Redfish along a shallow shoreline in one of my favorite duck ponds I like to fish often. We trolled up on these fish slowly and made a cast in front of the lead fish with a Black and Chartreuse Bayou Chub minnow rigged with a 1/4 oz. jighead and “SLAM” it was on! The lead fish took off with the bait, while the others followed. I told my cousin and longtime fishing buddy Tommy to cast to the next fish running along the bank, and “Bang” he had a nice Redfish on also. We walked the fish around the boat once or twice before landing them both.
After checking the weight and length of the fish, 26″ and 25 1/4″ both in the 5lb to 5 1/2lb class, we slid them in the box and went back on the deck, we trolled along looking for the school for another chance for a double.
We hooked up again not far down the bank, and had a double on once again. This time I had a smaller 20″ fish and Tommy had a “MAN” sized Redfish. He struggled with the fish, while it took 20 yards or so drag a few times, and never gave up till it made it to the net.
We landed our limit of Redfish and threw back 5 for the day, not a bad day on the water.
