Friday Aug. 7th
I had the pleasure of fishing with Brad from the northshore area and his friend Sarah from Pensacola area. We left Lafitte Harbor Marina at about 6:30am and Brad told me he was registered in the New Orleans Oilman Classic fishing rodeo. He wanted to try and catch a Redfish to enter in the under 27″ catagorie, so we headed south to an area I have been catching some really nice Redfish for the past few weeks, this is no secret area called Turtle Bay/ Little Lake area. We did not do very well for the first hour or so, so I decided to go try some shallow marsh I have been fishing from time to time, and it was the right place to try today, we caught our limit of 15 nice Redfish and released another 5 Redfish, none of which we could use for the rodeo. We did have a Redish that was 26″ long, but he was only around 6 to 7 pounds and would not do very well on the board. So I decided to try fishing the outside edges of the bays, this is where the better size Redfish have been hanging out. There is alot of bait along the shorelines in the bays right now and the larger size Redfish have been working the shores eating Mullets and crabs. We did catch a few really nice Redfish on the shorelines, but nothing we could enter in the rodeo. We caught 4 Redfish that were all oversize. one 27 1/4″, one 27 1/2″, one 28″ and one 29″ redfish. All of which would be too small for the 27″ and over. All in all we had a great day, Sarah caught a nice Redfish tailing in the grass, while we were site fishing for Refish, as you will see in the pictures it was a nice Redfish about 25″ long. She was very excited because she place the bait right in front of the fish, and saw him run out and attack her Black/Chartruese Tail Bayou Chub Minnow. Almost all the Redfish we caught on this trip were caught on Black and Chartruese tail Bayou Chub Minnows with a 1/4oz jighead and PowerPro line casting tightline to the banks. We did catch 3 or 4 Redfish on the Gulp Shrimp under a cork in the Natural color. This was later in the day when the bite seemed to slow down. And as always this was New Orleans Fishing At Its Finest!
I want to thank Brad and Sarah for booking their trip with myself Capt. Scott Poche` and Crescent City Fishing Charters Inc. I had a great time and I look forward to fishing with you again in the future.
